"Plant Talk"

Dear Students,

You are going to do a short presentation for your classmates about a plant of your choice. We have been learning about plants in class and now it is time for you to become the class expert on one plant! Choose a plant that is interesting to you. You can choose a tree, flower, house plant, vegetable, or any other type of plant). Ask your parents to help you to understand more about your plant. For your presentation, you will bring in the plant (or a photo or drawing of your plant) and be prepared to discuss your plant in front of the class. Your talk should be no longer than 2 minutes. Also, be prepared for two or three questions from the group.
Have fun choosing your plant. We look forward to hearing your "Plant Talk"!
Sincerely,
The Grade Three Teachers

Dear Parents,

Your support in our Plant Talk is very much appreciated. Please help your child pick an appropriate plant to discuss in front of the class. We ask that the children "talk" about their plant instead of "read" from notes. Therefore, the students need only to bring the plant, a photograph, a drawing or a piece of the plant (cutting, leaf, flower, etc.); no write-up, please. Their talk should be no longer than two minutes. We are not asking the children to memorize a prepared speech but rather to be able to speak informally, in front of the class about their topic. Please help your child collect information on their plant and organize their thoughts. Here are some suggestions for information it might be helpful to include:

  • What does your plant look like? (What are the parts of your plant)
  • Where is your plant located or grown?
  • What care does your plant need to grow? (What does the plant need to survive)
  • How is your plant useful?
  • Interesting or unusual facts about your plant
  • Why did you choose this plant to talk about?
There will be a presentation schedule posted or sent home with next week's homework. Thank you for helping your child to prepare for their "Plant Talk"!

Yours in Education,
The Grade Three Team
